### Travel Requirements for Sri Lanka

1. Visa and Entry Guidelines

General Requirement: All travelers are required to have a valid passport that remains effective for at least six months from the date they enter Sri Lanka.

Tourist Visas / ETA: The majority of visitors must secure an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) prior to their arrival through the official website. Approved ETAs are generally valid for 30 days and allow for two entries; extensions for up to six months can be requested once in the country.

Visa Fees and Processing:

Payments can be made using debit or credit cards.

ETA approvals are typically completed within 24 hours, although it is advisable to apply several days in advance.

Visa on Arrival: Following a court ruling in 2024, e-visa services are currently on hold; however, travelers from various countries, including the UAE, can receive a visa on arrival for up to 30 days, which may be extended.

Visa Exemptions: Nationals from 35 countries — including the UAE, India, UK, US, and Germany — can travel visa-free for up to 30 days under a temporary pilot initiative running from October 2024 to April 2025 (fees waived).

2. Additional Entry Criteria

Yellow Fever Certificate: This is mandatory for travelers coming from regions where yellow fever is prevalent, particularly certain areas in Africa and South America.

Proof of Funds: Immigration authorities may ask for evidence (such as bank statements or pay stubs) to demonstrate that you have adequate financial resources for your stay and return journey.

Health Insurance: It is highly recommended — and in some cases mandatory — to have health or travel insurance that covers emergencies or medical evacuations.

Chikungunya Outbreak & Mosquito Precautions: As of May 2025, certain regions (including parts of Colombo and Gampaha) are experiencing a chikungunya virus outbreak. Travelers are advised to use mosquito repellent, wear long-sleeved clothing, and take precautions during dawn and dusk.

Security Considerations: There is an elevated risk of terrorism in some areas, including popular tourist destinations. Travelers should remain vigilant, especially in crowded places and around places of worship. Be cautious of opportunistic crimes and credit card fraud. Solo female travelers and LGBTQ+ individuals should consider additional safety measures, such as dressing modestly and traveling in groups.
